Hosted by the ICAA Southeast Chapter | 3 Credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Hand Drafting)
This course introduces students to the foundations of mechanical drafting and architectural lettering. The presentation will begin with a short lecture on the historic art of the Draftsman followed by an orientation to the tools, materials and methods historically used to create technical drawings before the advent of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) programs. Participants will complete a series of short exercises designed to teach the foundational skills required to create precise technical drawings by hand.
Required Materials:
Lead, Velum, and Drafting Boards will be provided.
Students should bring:-Architectural Scale-T-Square-Drafting Tape-Staedler Lead Holder-Steadler Lead Sharpner-Lettering Guide-Plastic Eraser-Erasing Shield
Please note: if you bring your own drafting set, you should also bring your own lead. Mechanical pencils are prohibited for this class.
Instructor:
Michelle Moody is a Draftsman and Project Manager at Steven W. Spandle, Architect. A graduate of the Architecture Program at Southern Illinois University she earned Degrees in Mechanical Drawing, Architecture, and Architectural History as well as a Master's degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology with an emphasis on Classical Design.
Historically Architectural Lettering was the Draftspersons first engagement with the craft of creating a successful Architectural Drawing and once served as the foundational course in an Architectural Âé¶¹AV. Michelle began her career when hand drafting was the industry standard, giving her a foundational mastery of the craft. Over a thirty-year career in Architecture she observed the transition from mechanical to digital design and has come to believe that an exceptional architectural practice relies on the physical and spatial awareness that hand drafting uniquely provides
